As the DJ and producer behind legendary hip-hop group Gang Starr his input on Hip-Hop would be enough to secure immortal status, but as a producer he’s worked with every leading star in the b-boy sphere and beyond, never failing to make them sound anything other than phenomenal. As one of the show sponsors, L’usine caught up with DJ Premier and Nick Javas for a quick minute to see what was going on.
L’usine: You have been DJing and making music for over 20 years, how do you keep inspired?
Premier: I need to keep current. Keep studying whats up and what’s out there. If all the kids are going crazy over a track I got to know it even if I don’t like it. I still get inspirations by getting back to the classics and what I grew up with. I’m in a relationship with music.
L’usine: What can we expect from Year Round Records in 2010?
Premier: You can expect originality—all different styles. Ive produced different music for all the artists giving everybody their own identity and sound.
L’usine: Who do you think will be the next big producer?
Premier: There are so many talented people out there … Moss, illmind, Crisis, M Phases
L’usine: Who do you think will be the next big MC?
Premier: Drake is really hot now
Nick Javas: Drake is good and all, but he’s already established. Honestly, I’m up and coming and I’m going to be BIG. J Cole is a really good MC right now too.
L’usine: So what’s playing in your iPod these days?
Premier: Rock music. I have my workout folder and its filled with artists like: Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Annie Money, Blondie, Stevie Nicks
Nick Javas: Anything from NWA to Guns n’ Roses to old Doo Wop songs
L’usine: What are your favourite fashion brands? Sneaker brands?
Premier: I’m really not into brands. I like anything that fits me right like Old Navy jeans. Sean Jean is also making some good stuff. And sneakers will always be Nike. But you always got to have a pair of shell-toe Adidas in your closet even if you don’t wear them. Just to have them.
Nick Javas: I wear whatever fits me right. As for sneakers, I got my Air Force 1′s, Circa skate shoes or these Supras that I picked up in Japan.
