Saigon Spots

Saigon Intel | Bánh Cuốn Hải Nam

I used to work by this tiny little family run restaurant, Bánh Cuốn Hải Nam. They specialty is the ever-so-popular bánh cuốn. Bánh Cuốn literally means rolled cake.  Its a thin crepe-like roll made from rice flour and is usually filled with ground pork, Chinese mushrooms and onions. Its served with beansprouts, pork sausage and of course nuoc mam.

Dragon Noodle | Ramen, Ramen, Ramen

Yes, there’s a new noodle shop in town. Across from the mosque on Dong Du Street is Dragon Noodle.  It has the same average Japanese signage and decor, but the staff is incredibly friendly and the food is quick, cheap and easy to eat.

Quán Ăn Tiến Phát

My uncle used to be a spy for the Viet Cong during  the Vietnam war. Now a days he spends his time relaxing at his quiet little  home in District 5.  Everytime I visit him he always treats me to dim sum at Quán Ăn Tiến Phát which is one of those places you would never think about going to unless somebody takes you there…

Discovering Le Cong Kieu Street

If you have some time to kill why not head down to Le Cong Kieu Street, otherwise known as the antique market of Saigon.  Its a tiny street with 60 someodd shops within a hundred meters distance.   This narrow street of open sided shopfronts is one of HCMC’s charming. The shops are packed to the gills, you’d need an expert’s eye to spot decent oriental and Indochinese reproductions, vintage goods and the odd antique. More bustling and lively than ever, the antique market is a terrific way to explore Vietnam’s past and perhaps find a memento or two.

mmmm….Quan Oc 1A

We originally started coming here because the beer was unbelievably cold. We were drawn to this meager seafood stall by the food. It may not look like much, but you’ll be surprised on your first visit.  Locals frequently visit this stall so need not to worry about how fresh the seafood is. You must try the tamarind crab claws, scallops barbecued with scallions and roasted peanuts and the lemongrass steamed clams. You will not regret it.

Best French Restaurant – Le Toit Gourmand

Arguably the best French Restaurant in HCMC, Le Toit Gourmand is not located downtown, but out by the airport in a cozy home setting.  Enjoy an extravagant degustation meal of 3 appetizers, 1 main course followed by a decadent dessert, homemade cheese plate and an aperitif.  At Le Toit, Giles, the Chef and owner does all of the cooking and waiting, while his minions serve the guests. Throughout the meal, Giles left his post in the kitchen to chat, mostly in French, with his adoring diners. It’s a guaranteed memorable meal experience.
